Solstice was founded on a simple but powerful idea
Clean energy
shouldn’t be a luxury
In 2014, our co-founders Sandhya Murali and Steph Speirs launched Solstice out of MIT as a nonprofit focused on bringing solar power to underserved communities—people often left out of the rooftop solar revolution.
Today, Solstice operates as a for-profit connecting tens of thousands of households and businesses to local solar farms. And while we’ve grown since those early days, we’ve never lost sight of our goal to make clean energy accessible and inclusive.

Our story
Solstice Initiative is born
Founded by two rockstars as a nonprofit to expand clean energy access for all, Solstice Initiative advocated for equitable policy and friendly contracts for households.
Solstice Power Technologies (aka Solstice) enters the show
We launched our for-profit arm to build software that would bridge the gap between local solar farms and the subscribers that stood to benefit from them.
Solstice develops EnergyScore
We developed a smarter, more inclusive way to qualify households for clean energy products, proving that credit scores don’t have to shape consumers’ destiny in this industry.
Solstice joins Mitsui & Co.
Solstice was acquired by global clean energy leader Mitsui, strengthening our financial backing and expanding our reach without compromising our community-first values.
Solstice launches Community Benefit RECs
Solstice collaborates with enterprise corporations to distribute Community Benefit Funds to beneficiaries, including nonprofits and low-income households across the U.S.
We help households and businesses join community solar projects and save money on their electric bills—without installing their own solar panels.
We also provide a host of services for businesses and government to further their impact through clean energy. We’re incredibly grateful for our quickly-growing community that supports and reaps the benefits from local clean energy every day.
