Frequently Asked Questions For New Subscribers

Basics

Congratulations on going solar! There are a few moving parts between when you enroll with Solstice and when you begin seeing solar credits applied on your utility bill. Here's a breakdown.

  1. First, we match your energy use to a share of the solar farm. We submit new customers to their utilities at the end of every month.
  2. Second, your solar garden gets built. Our solar developer partners request that we subscribe customers while construction is underway so that the solar garden achieves maximum effect once it's turned on. For this reason, there will be some downtime between when you sign up and when you start to receive credits. You won't see any changes to your utility bill or payment requests from Solstice while you wait. In the meantime, we will keep you updated on your farm’s progress and prepare you for the day when it turns on!
  3. Once your solar farm goes online, it generates its first complete month's worth of power. Depending on what time of the month you get your utility bill, these credits may show up the same month or be added to your next bill. You will always see only one month's credits applied to your bill.
  4. Once you've gotten your solar credits, you will get an invoice from us detailing how much energy your panels produced, how much you would have paid to the utility for that electricity, and how much you will pay to Solstice. Remember: you'll pay Solstice for 90% of your solar credit’s value. That means that the price you pay with Solstice will always be lower than the amount you'd normally pay to your utility. 3 business days after sending our invoice, we will process an automatic transfer of funds for your solar credits with the discount included, via autopay.
  5. You can easily track your community solar subscription on a regular basis. On your Solstice account, you can monitor your panels' solar production, track your savings, see how many fossil fuels you're avoiding, and check up on your payments. It's all in one place! And if anything seems odd or confusing, you can always reach out to our customer support team and we'll be happy to help.

Our Customer Success team will keep you posted on your project's progress to completion. This process typically takes a few months. You can also find more information on your project's site and local benefits on our projects page at solstice.us/projects

Billing

As a community solar subscriber, you receive solar credits on your bills. We bill you for those credits at a discount, giving you savings month after month

Solar energy production does vary seasonally. As you might guess, your solar panels produce more when there is more sunlight! For that reason, your solar share should offset your bill well during the summer months with longer days. It might not always cover all your usage during the shortest winter days, though. Still, your solar share is sized to offset your annual energy use, so during the summer, your solar share will actually produce more energy than you need. You'll be able to bank credits during those months and draw upon them during the winter when you need them. With this system, your bills should be just about offset all year 'round..

Still, there will usually be small discrepancies between your credits and your bill. You may owe your utility a few dollars. Just remember, no matter how much of your bill is covered, you'll always be saving and contributing to a greener grid!

You monthly savings depend on two things: (1) Your solar share's production each month, and (2) The discount you get on your solar credits, as set out in your contract. You'll pay for any solar credits you receive on your utility bills at your specified discount, bringing you savings each month. For a reminder of your program's discount, visit our bill explainer in your platform account or visit our projects page Every month, you'll save on your solar credits according to the discount set out in your contract.

Your rates will not increase. There are no fees to join and no ongoing subscription fees to participate in Solstice Community Solar. The discount you receive on your solar credits is locked in for the duration of your contract, and you'll have the option to renew your contract at the end of the period. Since you only pay for the energy you use, but at a determined discount compared to your utility's rates, you'll always save compared to what you'd pay without community solar.

Account Management

The short answer is Solstice supports a subscription-based community solar model, which allows for low-commitment participation in your local solar farm with no upfront costs and guaranteed savings. Instead of paying to own your solar panels, you pay for the energy produced by your solar share - at a reduced rate compared to traditional utility prices. This allows for flexible participation that's good for the planet and your financial security.

We base the size of each subscriber's solar share on their past energy use. That's why we asked you to provide a recent copy of your electric bill when you enrolled. With this information, we'll allocate your household or business a portion of the solar farm that matches your energy needs.

While we size your solar share based on your historic energy use, we know that your energy needs may change. We will evaluate your allocation each month to ensure that the size of your solar share matches your usage. If you feel like your share needs adjustment, feel free to reach out to our customer support team to request that it be reviewed.

Nope! Your relationship with your electric utility company will remain exactly the same, except that your money will be going to support independent, locally-sourced clean energy. You may also get to keep your energy supplier, even if it is different from your utility. Solstice works with your existing provider to give you credits for supporting Community Solar right on your normal bills.
