community solar gardens

SOLSTICE IS DEDICATED TO BEING THE FIRST PROVIDER OF COMMUNITY-BASED SOLAR POWER TO UNDERSERVED AMERICANS.

In its initial projects, Solstice is transforming community organizations into “one-stop-shops” where individuals can enroll in community solar.

  • First, Solstice identifies community organizations—such as houses of worship, schools, or workplaces—interested in hosting a community solar garden and offering its constituents the opportunity to subscribe.
  • Next, Solstice partners with community solar developers looking for new customers to arrange the financing and installation of the community solar garden.
  • Third, Solstice designs, markets, and administers the community solar garden offering to households on behalf of community organizations.
  • Lastly, Solstice interfaces with utility companies to ensure each solar subscriber sees a credit on their monthly electricity bill.

Solstice Initiative enables low- and moderate-income households in America to switch to community solar for the first time. We are a Boston-based social enterprise that is currently executing projects in southern and central Massachusetts, with plans for nationwide expansion.

Under community solar, the approximately 80% of households that cannot install solar on their rooftop can switch to clean energy by subscribing to a portion of a neighborhood solar array.

Our approach begins with the insight that the primary reason a household switches to solar is whether they know a friend or neighbor who has already made the switch. Drawing on this line of thinking, Solstice conducts the community organizing and education necessary to ensure neighborhoods go solar.
